Steph interview thumbnail about a former teacher’s path out of the 9-to-5 into digital advising

From Teacher To Digital Advisor Advising Multi-Million Dollar Tradie Businesses

How does a former teacher go from knowing nothing about websites to building and ranking them, winning three national awards, and advising multimillion-dollar tradie businesses on SEO, AI and digital growth?

How does someone actually make that leap?

It wasn’t simply by becoming a better web designer.

Steph learned the fundamentals of building and ranking websites, then used that foundation to help businesses attract better clients, improve their digital presence and make smarter growth decisions.

In this interview, Steph reveals how she made the transition, built a flexible lifestyle business from regional Queensland, and became a trusted digital advisor.

If you’ve ever thought about how to quit corporate and start an online business that gives you both freedom and serious earning potential, Steph’s story is the blueprint. We’ve seen this same transformation play out with graduates like Jing Liu and Matt Jones, who built a location-independent lifestyle business from scratch with zero prior technical skills. Let me walk you through exactly what changed for Steph, and what you can learn from it.

The Starting Point: Foundations First

I want to be really clear about something before we go any further, because I don’t want anyone reading this to get the wrong idea. The foundations still count. They count enormously. Steph said it herself, and she’s spot on:

If you don’t have those foundations you can’t actually get to the level of selling a strategy or advising people.

So when Steph first started, she learned the proper way to build websites. Real keyword research. Proper SEO. How websites actually work under the hood, not just how to make them look pretty. That technical grounding is non-negotiable. It’s the difference between someone who calls themselves a “web designer” and someone who can walk into a business and genuinely move the needle on their growth.

And this is where so many people get it wrong. They think the skill is in making a nice-looking website. It isn’t. As Steph put it, “I quickly realised the difference between a website designer and someone who understands how websites work and how people buy.” That understanding is what we drill into our students from day one, because it’s the platform everything else gets built on.

The Shift: From Building Websites to Selling Strategy

Here’s where Steph’s story gets genuinely exciting. As she started talking to more business owners, she noticed a pattern. People kept coming to her thinking a new website was going to be some kind of magic wand that would miraculously turn their business around.

She knew better. A great website is important, but it’s only one piece of a much bigger puzzle. So instead of just taking the brief and building the site, Steph started digging deeper. She’d have a much broader conversation with her clients about their business as a whole. What was actually profitable for them? How did they want the business to run day to day? Who were their ideal clients?

And then something clever happened. The website conversation moved to the end of that process, not the beginning.

The website really became almost at the end of that conversation. Obviously we want the website to look amazing and bring people in, but it had a bigger job than just being a pretty brochure website.

This is the leap. The website is still the foot in the door, because it’s something every business owner understands regardless of their industry. But the real value Steph delivers now is everything around it. Deep keyword research to target higher-value clients. Conversion rate optimisation so the traffic actually turns into paying customers. Google Business Profile optimisation. SEO. A bit of guidance on social. And increasingly, AI automations for trades businesses. You can explore how Steph puts all of this into practice for her clients at Web Worthy Digital.

One example she gave really stuck with me. Some of her clients were getting plenty of phone calls, but they were the wrong calls. People wanting their lowest-paid service, or a service they didn’t even want to offer anymore. Steph’s job became repositioning their marketing and branding to speak directly to their ideal clients instead of trying to talk to everybody. That’s not web design. That’s strategy. That’s advisory work.

Ready to Build the Same Skills Steph Did?

If you’re reading this and thinking that becoming a trusted digital advisor sounds like a far better path than grinding away in a job you’ve outgrown, you’re right. This is exactly the journey we take people on inside our Digital Investors Program.

Steph didn’t come from a tech background. She was a teacher. What she had was a willingness to learn the foundations properly and then build on them. The program gives you those exact foundations, the technical skills, the SEO knowledge, the strategy frameworks, and the confidence to sit across from a business owner and genuinely help them. If you’ve been wondering how to quit corporate and start an online business with real-world demand, this is your starting point. Come and have a look at what’s inside.

The Human Edge That AI Can’t Touch

Now I want to talk about Steph’s real superpower, because it’s something I think gets massively underrated in this industry, especially right now with everyone losing their minds over artificial intelligence.

Steph works brilliantly with people. Specifically, she’s carved out a niche working with tradies and, more often, the women running those trades businesses behind the scenes. Her own husband is a tradie, so she gets it. She understands the world these clients live in.

It’s predominantly women that I work with because they’re oftentimes the one running so much of the business and the household. They’re so focused on the growth of the business, almost like a silent marketing partner, but they haven’t done a degree in marketing. They’re often the ones trying to Google stuff at midnight rather than sleeping.

Think about that for a second. That’s a real person, with a real problem, who is genuinely up at midnight trying to figure out their brand and their online presence. And along comes Steph, who can break down complex marketing concepts in a way that makes them feel calm and in control. She doesn’t bury them in jargon. She explains just enough so they understand what’s happening, then she goes and does it for them.

Her clients literally joke that it’s a “need to know basis.” They trust her so completely that they just say, go do it, we trust you. That trust is everything. We’ve always taught at the eBusiness Institute that people buy from people they like and trust, and that is the one thing AI will never replace.

This is consultative selling at its best, and the beautiful thing is, Steph didn’t even realise that’s what she was doing at first. She was just sitting down, having coffees, getting to know people, listening to their story. It came naturally because she genuinely cares. That human interaction is, in my words, 100% AI-proof.

How AI Actually Fits Into the Picture

Let’s address the elephant in the room, because I know it’s on everyone’s mind. AI is a genuine game changer, and yes, it’s a big part of why Steph’s role has evolved the way it has.

Here’s the thing though. AI hasn’t changed the fundamentals. The SEO foundations are still the same. A good website is still a good website. What AI has done is change how fast and how well Steph can deliver results for her clients. She was an early adopter, she uses these tools natively, and that gives her a serious edge.

But she made a point that I think every aspiring digital investor needs to hear. “You can make it with AI, or come up with a really cool strategy with AI, but if you don’t know the fundamentals, it’s just going to be AI slop that everyone else is delivering.” People are running keyword research through AI tools without any idea whether the results are legitimate. They think they have a clever strategy. They’ve never fact-checked a thing.

This is exactly why the foundations matter so much. AI in the hands of someone who understands the underlying strategy is a superpower. AI in the hands of someone who doesn’t is a liability. Steph sits firmly in the first camp, and that’s what lets her use these tools to deliver better, faster outcomes while everyone else is producing the same generic rubbish.

Reading the Room With AI

One subtle thing Steph mentioned really impressed me. She doesn’t lead with AI in every conversation. She reads people first. Some clients are fearful of AI and would be put off if she came in talking about it. Others are curious and want to nerd out about it with her. The vast majority simply don’t realise how much of their digital strategy already involves it.

So she meets each client where they are. “It all comes back to your interpersonal skills and your listening skills,” she said. Some of her clients are happily burying their heads in the sand about AI, but they trust Steph to know what they need to know so their business doesn’t get left behind in AI search down the track. Others want to lean in and learn. Either way, Steph’s job is to take the fear out of it and make it human.

You Don’t Need a Big City to Build a Big Business

I love this part of Steph’s story, and I think it’s incredibly encouraging for anyone who doesn’t live in a major capital. Steph is based in Hervey Bay, a regional coastal town in Queensland, right next to Fraser Island. It’s a fast-growing tourist region, but it’s not Sydney or Melbourne.

And yet that’s precisely where her approach shines. Business owners in regional areas are looking online and seeing big city competitors with slick marketing, and they’re getting nervous about what AI means for their future. They’re worried about being wiped out. They’re sitting at home wondering if they need to buy yet another course or sign up to some expensive new tool.

What they actually want is a human being who can explain it all and reassure them. As Steph put it beautifully:

The relationships you build with people, the community, that’s so much more important than promising all of these big things that huge companies offer.

In her region, the website is the lead-in. The strategy and advisory work sits alongside it. And the messaging she and I talked about on this episode, positioning herself as a digital advisor rather than just a website builder, is landing beautifully. It’s working. If you’re still weighing up whether now is the right time to make a move like this, our post on why you shouldn’t quit your job yet is worth a read before you take the leap.

Why Websites Still Matter in an AI World

Before anyone runs off thinking websites are dead, let me reinforce what Steph said, because it’s important. People still need their website to work well, because that’s where prospects go to check that a business is legitimate and to get their questions answered.

But here’s the modern twist. The large language models, the AI search engines, are also learning about a business from its website. So a well-built, well-structured site now does double duty. It serves the human visitor, and it feeds the AI. That two-pronged approach is exactly what Steph helps her clients understand, and it’s why the foundational skills are more valuable now, not less.

The Real Takeaway From Steph’s Journey

What gets me about Steph’s story is the timeline. This entire transformation, from learning to build websites all the way through to advising multi-million-dollar businesses, happened in roughly two years. Two years. From a teacher who’d never built a website to an award-winning digital advisor with serious clients who hang on her advice.

When I asked if she ever thought she’d end up here, her answer was a simple no. “I often have to stop and be like, wow, I know a lot about websites and AI.” She’s having fun in the journey, no regrets, and she’s genuinely excited about where it’s heading.

So if there’s one thing I want you to take away from this, it’s this. Stop thinking purely about building basic websites for businesses. That model is going to feel old school very quickly with where AI is heading. Instead, become the person Steph has become. A digital advisor. Someone who understands the foundations, uses AI as a force multiplier, and most importantly, brings that human element that no robot can replicate.

That combination, real skills plus genuine human connection, is the most future-proof business you can build. It’s the path Steph took, and it’s a path that’s wide open for anyone willing to learn the foundations properly.
