Lucy built the foundations of a six-figure business from a hospital bed

From Hospital Bed to Six-Figure Lifestyle Freedom Business

Some stories stick with you. Lucy’s is one of them.

I’ve coached a lot of people over the years, and I’ve seen plenty of comeback journeys. But what Lucy and her partner Reefe pulled off sits in a category of its own. This is a woman who built the foundations of a six-figure online business while she was literally lying in a hospital bed, losing consciousness in supermarkets, and being told by a specialist that she’d be unwell for the rest of her life.

She didn’t accept that. And the way she fought her way back, while caring for two young boys and digging her family out of debt, is exactly the kind of story I wanted to share with our community. Adversity doesn’t discriminate, and the real question is always what you do next. Do yourself a favour and watch the full conversation with Lucy in the video below.

Let me walk you through how Lucy turned the darkest period of her life into a genuine Lifestyle Freedom business, and what you can take from it.

The Trap of the “Traditional” Business Grind

Before any of this, Lucy was a lawyer for about eight years. She loved it. Then she and Reefe had two boys, and like a lot of parents, they had that epiphany moment about what really matters. So they took a leap. Reefe is an electrician by trade, so they launched a solar installation business in Adelaide, and Lucy handed in her resignation to be more present with the kids.

What followed was four years of grind. And I mean proper grind.

They deliberately kept their capital low and tried to build the business as they went. Reefe was on the tools all day, then out meeting clients after hours, then sending quotes late at night. Lucy was home with a newborn and a toddler. They were, in her words, “passing ships.”

“We just kept on thinking that this is, you know, we have to do those years and there’ll be a light at the end of the tunnel. But it was pretty hard to see that light.”

This is so common it almost hurts to hear it. They had a business, but they didn’t have a lifestyle. Every lead had to be chased. Every job depended on Reefe physically being there. If he stepped away, the work stopped and the wages couldn’t be paid. There was no system, no leverage, and certainly no freedom. Lucy was running on adrenaline, carrying the household and the kids, and the underlying stress just kept building. It’s a pattern I see constantly — and it’s exactly why trading time for dollars in a traditional business model is so dangerous when there’s no digital leverage underpinning it.

They told themselves it was normal. They’d get the time back eventually. Sound familiar?

When Everything Collapsed at Once

The warning signs were there. Lucy had dropped around 10 kilos in six months. Her energy had plummeted. She put it down to having two kids and a busy life, and she ignored it.

Then it erupted. The family was at a caravan and camping show, of all places, looking for the rig they dreamed of taking on a lap around Australia. Lucy suddenly got sick. She thought she’d caught a bug. She never bounced back.

“It was almost like a volcano erupted. It was like my body had just said, we’ve had enough.”

What followed was eight months of confusion and fear. She’d lose consciousness without warning, sometimes in the supermarket with both boys with her. Her body reacted to foods, to heat, to things nobody could explain. Reefe would head to a job never knowing if he’d need to drop everything and rush home. And every time he did, the business bled money.

Eventually Reefe said the words that must have been so hard to hear and so hard to say. He told her her health was the most important thing and they needed to shut the business down.

“That was a really hard pill to swallow. It really did feel like we were throwing in the towel. And I felt like it was all my fault.”

I want to pause on that, because it matters. That guilt is something I’ve seen again and again in our community, particularly with the mums. Liz, my own wife and business partner, went through her own serious health crisis years ago. So when I say I understand this space, I mean it personally. The shame and the sense of being a burden is real, and it is almost never deserved.

They moved in with Lucy’s parents. They went into debt. One well-known specialist handed down a diagnosis, brushed his hands, and effectively said this is who you are now, here’s your medication. It didn’t sit right with either of them. Reefe insisted they keep searching for answers. Lucy spent New Year’s Eve in a hospital room listening to fireworks she couldn’t see, feeling like life was happening without her.

This was rock bottom. No business. Mounting debt. Two little kids. And no clear diagnosis.

The Decision That Changed the Trajectory

Here’s where Lucy did something I think is genuinely brilliant, and it’s the lesson I most want you to take from this.

She was drowning in her own health crisis, and she made a conscious choice to grab onto something else. Not to ignore her health, but to give her mind something hopeful to work on.

“I said, I just need something to pull me up out of the water, something to hold on to.”

For years she and Reefee had talked about upskilling in marketing and lead generation for their solar business, but they’d never had the time. Now, suddenly, time was the one thing she had. She came across the eBusiness Institute, watched one of our webinars from her sick bed, and something clicked.

Reefe was hesitant at first. He wanted her to rest. But Lucy understood her own mind. She’d always pulled herself out of ruts by learning something new. So they enrolled, and she started watching our training seminars from the hospital.

“As soon as we started learning, I was honestly watching seminars in hospital, and it would brighten me. We just started to get this light at the end of the tunnel.”

This is the power of building a real digital skill set. It costs almost nothing to start, you can do it from a bed, a couch, or a caravan, and it’s the most reliable path I know to creating income that doesn’t depend on you trading hours for dollars. That terror Lucy felt about being dependent on a single income source? Learning to make money online is the antidote to it.

If you’re reading this and you’re stuck in your own hard season, this is your moment. The exact skills Lucy used to rebuild her life are what we teach inside our flagship program. You can learn how to build, renovate and profit from websites and online businesses in the Digital Investors Program here. It’s the same foundation that turned Lucy’s hospital bed into the launchpad for a six-figure business.

From Free Websites to a Real Income Stream

Lucy didn’t just learn. She implemented, fast.

Her first project was rebuilding the online presence of their own shut-down solar business. It was the perfect testing ground because there was zero downside. The business was already closed. She couldn’t break anything that wasn’t already broken.

Then opportunities started appearing. Reefe would chat to mates who were tradies, or to the woman who ran the kids’ nature school, and people kept saying they’d love help with their websites. Lucy was terrified of putting herself out there at first, but she started building sites for friends to sharpen her skills.

And here’s the thing. This is exactly how I tell people to start a profitable online side hustle. You don’t wait until you feel ready. You learn the skill, you build real things for real people, and you let competence and confidence grow together. Lucy was earning while she learned, which beats the daylights out of spending four years and a fortune on a degree that may or may not be relevant in the AI age. Financial freedom isn’t about chasing millions – it’s about building smart, sustainable income streams that work for your life, and that’s exactly what Lucy was doing.

The breakthrough came from that renovated solar website.

Relaunching the Business the Smart Way

Lucy and Reefe looked at the website they’d rebuilt and thought, why don’t we just reopen the business? But this time, everything would be different. They made a firm decision: they would never go back to a model that destroyed their health.

So they redesigned the entire structure. Reefe came off the tools completely. Instead of installing systems himself, he focused purely on sales and conversations, which he’s brilliant at, and they used trusted local subcontractors for the installs. The leverage they’d never had before was suddenly built into the model.

They relaunched with no Google ads. They wanted slow, sustainable, local growth. Within about three months, quality local leads started flowing in.

“Everything we put on the website felt very authentically us. I was recording Reefe, getting information directly from him, and putting it on the website in a user friendly way, with questions people really wanted answers to. And it really resonated.”

That’s the magic of understanding digital assets properly. A well-built, genuinely helpful website becomes a lead-generation machine that works while you rest, while you recover, while Reefe is out surfing. Which, by the way, is exactly where he was while Lucy and I recorded this conversation.

Multiplying the Income and Building a New Future

Let me be clear about the results, because they matter and Lucy earned every bit of them.

Over roughly 18 months, Lucy and Reefe didn’t just replace their old income. They multiplied it. And they did it while she was still recovering, not after she was back to full health. They went from debt, from a closed business, from one fragile income source, to genuine financial security and a properly redesigned Lifestyle Freedom business.

Then they took it further. Lucy and Reefe now run Swell Website Design, their own digital agency helping local trades across Australia generate the same quality leads they cracked for themselves. They’ve even built a national website that lists local solar installers right across the country, giving everyday Australians a way to find a trustworthy installer in their area.

Think about that journey. Lawyer and electrician, four hard years grinding a traditional business, a devastating health collapse, and then, in a short space of time, a thriving online income built on new skills.

“It does always surprise you how quickly things can turn around when you look back in a five year picture. If you just keep doing those little steps each day, just something to move the needle forward.”

Reefe’s mindset through it all was simple and powerful. He believed that if they just kept doing the right things, the money would come. It did.

The Lesson That Matters Most: Find Your Community

I asked Lucy what she’d say to someone in the middle of their own hard season right now. Her answer wasn’t about SEO or website builds or revenue. It was about people.

“Find your community and find your people. The people you surround yourself with have such a big impact on how you envision your life and your expectations.”

This is something I’ve believed my whole career. When Lucy joined us, she met other members travelling around Australia working online, and others who’d been through their own health crises. People who could say to her, with total certainty, “Lucy, in two years’ time you’ll have more energy than you’ve ever had.” That hope changes what you believe is possible.

“To be able to find your community, it’s so uplifting. It made me feel so much less isolated.”

She’s right. Learning a new skill is one of the fastest ways to find the right people, because you end up surrounded by others moving in the same direction you want to go.

Your Hard Season Could Be Your Starting Point

If there’s one thing Lucy’s story proves, it’s this: your current circumstances do not get to dictate your future. A hospital bed, a pile of debt, a closed business, a frightening diagnosis. None of it stopped her from building something real.

She did it by learning a practical, high-value digital skill set, implementing fast on a real project, and surrounding herself with the right community. That’s not luck. That’s a repeatable formula, and it’s exactly what we teach.

If Lucy can build the foundations of a six-figure business from a hospital bed, while raising two boys and recovering her health, then whatever you’re facing right now is not too big to work with. The opportunity to make money online and design a life around your health and your family is genuinely available to you.

Take the first step the same way Lucy did. Come and learn these skills inside our Digital Investors Program here, and let us help you build your own Lifestyle Freedom business.

Hats off to Lucy and Reefe. What a comeback. And to everyone reading this in the thick of a hard season, hold onto Lucy’s words: keep doing the right things, keep moving the needle, and find your people. The light at the end of the tunnel is real.
