How He Built A $25K/Month Online Business with Just 5 Clients

Greg Went from Treading Water as a Musician to Building a $300K/Year Lifestyle Business in Just Two Years …

Most people build businesses that feel like 9-to-9 jobs—working around the clock, burnt out, underpaid, and trapped.

Greg O’Rourke did the opposite.

Instead of becoming a slave to his business, he built two that support him—and the life he actually wants to live.

In this interview, you’ll learn how Greg went from just getting by with his jazz guitar website to earning $10,000/month semi-passively.

Then, using those same digital skills, he landed five clients paying $5,000/month—with his team doing 90% of the work.

All without 60-hour weeks or missing family time.

In a world where many of us want to achieve financial independence, Greg stands as a testament to what’s possible when digital skills meet strategic implementation.

Greg is the owner of an expert jazz guitar education website that was only making “a few thousand a month”. But he transformed his digital presence into multiple thriving income streams that provide genuine financial freedom—all while working fewer hours and enjoying a more balanced lifestyle.

“I remember grinding it out until three in the morning again and again to get courses out. And do you know how much time I spend on this thing now? It’s probably two hours a week just to maintain the project.” – Greg O’Rourke, founder FretDojo

Greg’s journey offers valuable insights for anyone looking to create location freedom, financial security, or multiple revenue channels in today’s digital landscape. Let’s explore how he achieved this remarkable transformation.

Greg Owned a Successful Online Business, But Had Plateaued

When Greg first connected with Matt and Liz Raad at eBusiness Institute, his jazz guitar education website, FretdDojo, was performing well but had plateaued. Despite working diligently, Greg found himself hitting an invisible barrier to growth.

“Things were going a bit lukewarm. I was making a few thousand a month and just plodding along. But it felt like I’d hit this glass ceiling. I was trying a bit of this, a bit of that—a bit of marketing over here, a bit of ads, a bit of email—and nothing was really hitting the mark.”

What Greg lacked weren’t just tactics but core digital marketing principles that could systematically grow his business.

He Found a Way to Re-Ignite His Business When He Met Matt & Liz Raad…

The turning point came when he attended a webinar about creating websites for local businesses. While the strategy appealed to him, what truly resonated was the expertise in communicating value.

“The thing that really struck me about Matt and Liz were just how exceptionally good they are at communicating value,” Greg shares. “I thought, ‘These guys are the mentors for me.’ I remember racing to my car to grab my wallet. I’m in. Let’s do it!”

…Who Taught Him to Start a Digital Agency for Quick Cash Flow

It was at this point that Greg was facing immediate financial pressure. He and his family needed to relocate to a more expensive part of Australia, and his existing income wouldn’t suffice.

This urgency prompted him to embrace the digital agency strategy despite initial reservations. It was his way of how to future proof his family income.

Greg Went from Social Anxiety to a Successful Digital Agency Owner

See How Greg Gently Built up his Networking Skills to Overcome Fear and Grow his Business…

Perhaps the most significant hurdle in Greg’s journey wasn’t technical but personal. Despite his digital expertise, Greg struggled with social anxiety—the very skill needed to build a successful agency business.

“I struggled a lot in those in-person social situations. Matt quietly suggested that to grow this agency, I should go to BNI or networking events.”

1./ He Participated in the 100 Call Challenge

Just the thought of meeting people in person scared Greg. It was the last thing he thought he’d ever want to do. But, with gentle coaching, Greg took the plunge and began cold calling businesses—a process he describes as “excruciatingly awkward.” Yet this discomfort proved transformative.

After about 40 calls, Greg was slightly less uncomfortable. After about 60, even less so. But he remembers when he got to the 70th call, something clicked in his brain. Greg thought:

“I don’t really care that much anymore. I’m just going to enjoy talking to these people, be interested in them, and see what happens.”

This psychological breakthrough marked a turning point. Within the next 10 calls, Greg landed his first clients as a local SEO and Web Design Expert.

2./ With His New Confidence, Greg Joined a Local Business Networking Group

Soon after, he joined Business Network International (BNI), which became a significant source of leads.

“BNI is absolutely fantastic, particularly for web build projects. It’s actually like soft marketing. You rock up, have breakfast, have a chat, and then you get all this work coming in. I can’t think of any easier way to make money than that.”

How Greg Scaled His Digital Agency to 6-Figures within 12 Months

1./ He Used a Unique Pricing Strategy to Quickly Grow His Income

As Greg’s confidence grew, so did his pricing strategy. His first website builds were priced at $1,000 to $1,500—undervalued relative to the work involved. But with each successful project, he implemented a systematic approach to increasing rates.

“My rule was every time a new successful sale was made for a website, I’d step up the next one by 20% for a similar sized project. But after that, it wasn’t so much the 20% concept. It was more like the 200% concept. I’d say, ‘I’ll do it for you for $15,000,’ thinking they could possibly never say yes—and they did. The next one was $20,000, and I started tapping out around $35-40,000.”

This success of his award winning website builds soon presented a new challenge: too much work. Greg found himself overwhelmed with concurrent projects and insufficient team support.

“I was at a networking event, and someone asked how things were going. I said I had about 10 concurrent web builds going on, and I only had one part-time person working for me. That was pretty hard work.”

2./ He Pivoted Focus to Ongoing Retainer Clients

Through coaching, Greg realized he needed to restructure his approach. Rather than maximizing client volume, he pivoted to a boutique agency model focusing on fewer, higher-value clients.

Today, his agency maintains around half a dozen clients paying $4,000-$5,000 monthly retainers, generating a consistent $20,000-$25,000 monthly income with minimal personal involvement.

3./ He Leveraged His Skills by Growing His Team

“I provide general strategic direction, especially on the marketing side,” Greg notes. “My team will execute that plan. Most of my job is either in strategic discussions with clients or talking to clients if they call occasionally. All of the grunt work is completely outsourced to my employees.”

How Greg Turned FretDojo into a Semi-Passive Income Machine

1./ He Diversified Traffic Sources to his Website

With his agency business stabilized, Greg returned his attention back to FretDojo, focusing on YouTube SEO as a primary growth channel. His approach illustrates the patience often required for digital success.

“I deliberately created several YouTube videos designed to rank and convert into email subscribers.”

Greg had a very clear strategy, whereas before he was just posting a bit of this and that more as a hobbyist.

The importance of patience when growing your traffic sources…

One particularly ambitious video initially seemed to fail, receiving only 200 views despite weeks of production effort. Discouraged, Greg temporarily stepped back from the project. But four months later, everything changed.

YouTube just picked up this video, and it went bananas. It got hundreds of thousands of views very quickly. But the main thing was thousands of email subscribers started signing up from this one video.

“That’s when I realized this SEO stuff—you’ve got to be patient with it. You can’t just say ‘it’s not working’ even up to 12 months.”

2./ He Reduced His Reliance to Run the Site by Using the Experience of Other Expert Instructors

Alongside SEO, Greg transformed his business model by bringing on expert instructors to reduce his personal workload while enhancing value for students.

“We started bringing in these amazing players. Some of the best players in the world would come on our show. Eventually, one of them became our main jazz guitar instructor. It’s not only been great for me because my time’s more leveraged, but it’s also great for the students because they get such an exceptional quality of instructor.”

Today, FretDojo consistently generates $10,000 monthly in semi-passive income. Greg further enhanced this with high-ticket offerings developed through webinar funnels, generating an additional $20,000+ during launch periods.

“We came up with a comprehensive program that would really help elevate people’s abilities in jazz guitar. Out of the gate, that thing went bananas. We made over $20,000 in that first launch.”

Greg’s Advanced Income Strategy: Revenue-Share Model

Most recently, Greg has begun exploring revenue-share arrangements with select clients—a more advanced approach that aligns his interests directly with his clients’ success.

“Because we’re very confident in our results, I had a meeting with a client who had been burned by agencies in the past. I said, ‘You know what, you can just pay us for results. We’ll just take a percentage of your overall revenue through this channel that we’re managing. If we don’t get results, you don’t pay us anything.'”

The client’s response was immediate: “You’re the first person that’s actually talked to me like that ever, that is so confident in their results.”

While Greg’s revenue-share arrangements typically start at 10% and can reach 25% for high-performing campaigns, he cautions that this approach requires experience and confidence in your ability to deliver.

“Once you level up after a few clients, you’ll start to hit your stride. And you realize, ‘You know what, we’re really good at this particular way of helping people.’ And then you can offer really exciting opportunities for clients.”

The Path to Achieving a Balanced Digital Lifestyle Business

Greg’s journey shows the journey many digital entrepreneurs experience—from grinding through long hours to creating systems that generate income with minimal personal involvement. Today, he enjoys a lifestyle that balances income with personal freedom.

“I enjoy going to the beach, Matt. I don’t really want to have too many clients,” Greg laughs when explaining his boutique agency approach.

What makes Greg’s story particularly valuable is how he’s combined multiple digital strategies to create a diversified income portfolio:

  1. A boutique agency serving select high-value clients
  2. A semi-passive membership site generating consistent monthly income
  3. Periodic high-ticket launches for significant revenue boosts
  4. Performance-based revenue-share arrangements for growth potential

The result is a business ecosystem that supports his desired lifestyle while maintaining significant income potential.

How Greg Created Financial Freedom & Lifestyle Flexibility

For those looking to create their own financial freedom through digital skills, Greg’s experience offers several valuable lessons:

Embrace discomfort for growth

Greg’s breakthrough came when he faced his social anxiety through cold calling and networking.

“Sometimes when you really fear something, it’s often the thing you most need to do.”

Start small, then scale

Greg began with $1,000 website builds before systematically increasing his rates with each successful project. This gradual approach allowed him to build confidence while steadily increasing income.

Build systems and teams

The transition from working IN the business to ON the business transformed Greg’s lifestyle. “Now I’ve got top-class people doing all the things. I’m more the conductor of the orchestra,” he explains.

Be consistent and patient with SEO strategies

Greg’s YouTube success came after months of apparent failure. “You can’t just kind of like, ‘Oh, it’s not working,’ even up to 12 months. It’s a much slower burn, but it compounds over time.”

Align business structure with lifestyle goals

Rather than maximizing growth at all costs, Greg consciously structured his businesses to support his desired lifestyle—substantial income with time freedom.

Perhaps most importantly, Greg’s story demonstrates the power of persistence. As he puts it:

“Everyone starts at different points. You’ve just got to build each building block one step at a time, and the only way to fail is to quit in this game. You just keep going and you’ll get there.”

For those willing to learn the skills, implement the strategies, and persist through challenges, Greg’s journey shows that digital business can indeed deliver the financial freedom and lifestyle flexibility that so many seek.
